Now that we’ve settled into the new year, we were able to sit down with Cara Willison, Event Manager of First Night Boston 2025, to get her thoughts on this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration. With thousands of attendees and 13 hours of programming at Boston City Hall Plaza, Cara led the Conventures team and our partners in the planning and logistics of this large-scale event.
Congratulations on your first year leading First Night Boston! How did you enjoy your first time managing First Night?
Thank you! Managing First Night was an incredible learning experience. With a project of this scale, delegating tasks was essential, and I’m so grateful to the team at Conventures for embracing their roles with confidence and enthusiasm—it truly made the experience so much more enjoyable for me!
What was the biggest surprise you encountered?
The weather was a surprise this year! Vendors faced pouring rain while setting up on December 30th, only for temperatures to climb to nearly 50 degrees by midday on the 31st. It’s a great reminder to dress in layers and bring extra socks!
Who were some of your most important partners?
Our sponsors allow us to make each year bigger and better, with unforgettable performances, activities, and fireworks. Many thanks to Meet Boston and Amazon, and our many other sponsors.
This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of some key vendors: Thistle Communications provides the screens, stage, and sound for our performers; PORT Lighting creates stunning light and laser displays that set the perfect backdrop; and PEAK Tents ensures we all stay warm and dry.
Lastly, we’re deeply grateful to the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, and Boston EMS for keeping everyone safe!
When did you know the event was successful?
I knew I had planned well when my inbox stayed empty during Christmas week—no last-minute emergencies to handle! The event’s success was clear when I checked the live camera feed from our command trailer and saw the plaza packed so tightly that the ground was invisible—and it was only 8:00 PM!
Any insight on what we should look forward to at First Night 2026?
First Night 2026 marks the 50th celebration! I hope we can honor the 49 years of tradition while elevating some of the signature elements that define First Night.
